When thinking about sixth tastes, you might say that it's not scientifically proven or it is not possible. But the sixth taste that you might be thinking of and it was actually scientifically proven recently. The 5 tastes we think of are are sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and savoury. However a research made in the U.S came up saying that fat located a chemical receptor in the taste buds on the tongue that recognises fat molecules, and found that its sensitivity varies between individuals.
A group of people were givensweet, sour, salty, bitter, umami, and fat samples. The samples were not mixed with other foods and all looked the same. The people were asked to taste the samples and place them in groups. Everyone could easily detect the sweet, sour and salty samples. These tastes are more pleasant by themselves. Yet most put bitter, umami and fat in the same group. The researchers say that the
people did this because, on their own, these three do not taste nice. The researchers have suggested a name for the fat taste oleogustus. |
