As I become a middle school student, there was a very shy, introvert and passive girl named Ji-suk in my class but from time to time she was extremely hot-tempered, aggressive and violent to us and even teachers. the problem was that we didn't know the reason why she was angry. Due to her unpredictable and odd behavior, almost all the classmates didn't like her and try to speak to her. I had heard of her rumor that she had been to the juvenile hall for stealing money and clothes form her neighboring houses.
Like other classmates, at first, I was also not fond of her. Of course, neither did she. I was very unsociable and inactive like her, there was no one to chat with. Although I didn't express her my
feelings directly, I was interested in her because we had something in common in many aspects such as personality and hobby.
One day, my father asked me whether I knew the very girl, Ji-suk or not. I told him that she was in the same class with me. I wondered why he wanted to now about her so I inquired of him the reason. He said to me that she was the daughter of one of his closest friends. Her father didn't do well in his school days. Instead of preparing for his future life, he hung around and stole money from other students.
He wasted his life for entertaining himself so he didn't get a job.
He coaxed himself with drinking alcohol and abusing his wife and Ji-suk. As time went by, the frequency and strength of his violence got worse and stronger. However, my father hadn't done anything and advised for him so he has been sorry for him as a friend since then. At this time, he firmly made up his mind to find anything to help his daughter.
In the long run, his wife got out of the terrible home with her daughter. And then she took her to her grandparents' house. Her new life at that place was not quite different from the previous one. She was left deserted because her grandparents were too old to take care of her and even themselves. The one thing better than the past was just that they didn't hit and abuse her. That's all. Since then, she has taken against people so when she felt that somebody treat her badly and unfairly, she abruptly turned into a delinquent student. She yelled and threw anything within her reach. But except for the special cases, she was very quiet and naive.
After hearing of her story, I could understand her situation well and I got to know why she did such an violent and aggressive deed toward the classmates. The following day, I approached softly and tried to speak to her with courage. At first, she didn't have any interest in me and say anything. Frankly speaking, I was a little upset but I warmly said to hello over and over again to be closer with her.
In the end, she unlocked her impregnable mind to me. Meanwhile, there happened a stunning and amazing event in my class. During P.E class, somebody broke into that place and stole money and several cell phones. One of the classmates rushed at homeroom teacher and told on him the news. On hearing this, my homeroom teacher got shocked and sighed and hastily ran to the classroom with his face flushed. He ordered all of us to confess and talk turkey to him. If did so, he would be willing to forgive and declare it null and void. On the contrary, If not, the person who had done it would be accused of the theft and punished heavily to the Student Disciplinary Committee. However, his efforts were proved to be useless because there was no one to admit to stealing them. After considering for a moment, he forced us to close our eyes and write the name of the most probable suspect on the paper that they had doubted.
Some minutes later, he unveiled all the papers and told us the name, pointing at Ji-suk and asked her to stand up. He extorted a confession from her into pilfering with a angry voice. But she consistently insisted on not doing such a bad thing. In spite of her insistence, he did never listen to her.
When he snatched her in order to take to the teachers' room, I stood up and shouted at him, "Teacher, it is not fair. You should give her a chance to be able to defend herself. Also, there is not clear evidence that she is a thief. Your judgement is based on the prejudice that she has ever stolen others' objects and is not a good student. So this is perfectly wrong."
I couldn't clearly explain even now why I did it and helped her at that time. After listening to my refutation and staring at me and other students, he finally did say he was sorry for regarding her as a criminal. He apologized her about his haste conclusion once again. At last, the terrible happening was over with many people hurt.
After the event, we became good and close friends. We always went about together except for sleeping. We were very happy and enjoyable. However, there was a big problem. We did do poorly at school due to focusing on play outside not studying. One day my father told me softly "My sweety, please think about which is the better way to help her ; just playing outside together or making her study to achieve her dream." Actually she hadn't had her own dream so she didn't like to study before meeting me.
I thought of it over and over again. And then I persuaded her to start studying instead of wasting time. Surprisingly, she couldn't agree to my opinion more. She confessed she had wanted to do it since a long time but she couldn't start to study because she didn't know how to do and what to begin first.
I set out to teach her two hours a day. To make her understood is too hard and challenging for me because she hadn't studied for several years. She forgot the materials very soon what she had been taught. However, we coped with and figured out the problems encouraging each other. The more the time passed by, the more improving her skills are.
By the end of that year, she got to be the second and I got to be the first in my class. All the classmates including teachers were shocked at the consequence of our perspiration and efforts. We felt proud of ourselves and appreciated each other. We made doubly sure that we should do our best to fulfill our dreams. she started to give the students in the orphanage a hope and listen to her story. She volunteered to be like their elder sister there. She told me that she felt she was a precious being when she helped them. After hearing her story, some of them changed their negative and helpless mind into positive and active mind to this society. Even they started to study little by little. While she was working there, She hoped to be a social worker to help the poor and weak and sick.
However, the happiness finally came to an end. When I was in the third grade, she left Mokpo because her mother wanted to live with her in Seoul. Unfortunately, I couldn't keep in touch with her because I lost my phone mistakenly so I didn't have her phone number any longer.
Since I met her first, I have really missed her and wanted to see her as soon as possible. Because of my little and tiny love and interest, I strongly believe that she could be better off her life. I would like to be a teacher to be able to make the hopeless and dreamless students active and passionate and helpful people. I always say to myself, I am sure I am like"The Rage in the Placid Lake." I think you and my small efforts and interest in someone and something can make our mother Earth be a better place. Let's do it now.
