Income Inequality causing Educational Problems 2013-04-09 ¿ÀÈÄ 10:00:00

In the past, Korean society gave a chance for students who lived in poverty. With their own effort and will, they could earn money and fame by entering high-ranked universities or by passing state examinations. A 'dragon' could emerge in a ditch. However, it became almost impossible for us to find those 'dragons' now. Education was ruined as a formula of transferring wealth or indigence.
The main reason is; the income polarization. It is making the educational gap larger. As the rich uses more money in private education than the poor, the importance of public education decreased. Also the students who got more private educations has the chance to learn more, the poor can't just study alone to succeed, as they did in the past. Moreover, the society is in need of smart and large-experienced students. Even though students in poverty tries hard, students whose parents are rich have more chance to satisfy the requirements. For instance, almost 50% percent of the students in special purpose high schools live in rich villages(called as Kangnam 3 gu). Especially, 47.1% of SKY universities' freshmen were born in rich households. The power of private education decides students' grade, and this causes the gap to get larger.
To solve this problem, the government has to enact various laws to help students who experience the unfairness of education because of wealth. Furthermore the Education Secretary has to try to change the entrance examination-centric structure ultimately, so that the 'dragon' has the chance to emerge again.
