Equal Opportunity Society 2016-04-23 ¿ÀÀü 1:21:00

Human tries to seek a higher quality of life. That is an intrinsic nature of most of human, regardless of age, gender, ability, literacy, race, religion, etc. Some people are born with silver spoons in their mouths, some people with lower intellectual ability. Some are born in Japan, some in Sudan. Some people are too old to learn how to use smart phone, some are too weak to get a job. A girl may have a big burn scar in the face, so she may cope with lots of hurdles from others' prejudice. A boy may be visually impaired. Given condition for the quality of life is not equal. Those inequality problem produces the equal opportunity issue.

As a direct aid to the inferior people, an arrangement of social measurements may provide them with an atoning condition for competition. Government policy and social measurements have been furnished to help them with equal opportunity. In college entrance, impaired people are to gain privilege to make up for their handicaps. This privilege is of course considerate benefit, however, in other sense, it may leave another scar on their self-esteem. What the impaired personnel wants first and most is "being treated as normal". They want to have "just an opportunity to have equal opportunity". This is the concept of equal opportunity. The most important measurement for equal opportunity is education, especially cultural education. Music training programs for the visually impaired awakes their musical potential. Some a cappella music program which is originated from Orff music teaching program in Germany is designed for visually impaired people to enjoy the pleasure of musical activity. Fashion program for people with intellectual disabilities is reported to result in amazing outcome. Studies on people with intellectual disabilities report that they also have strong concern for their appearances. Their feeling of difference in appearancefrom those of non-disabled will have a negative self-image. In fact, in 2001 a charming school had been held in Seoul for children with intellectual disabilities. It is reported the self-esteem of the people with intellectual disabilities raised sky high through the event.
Digital literacy is now a prerequisite for quality of life. Digital divide of people with disabilities, seniors, children in under-developed countries becomes a social problem. According to a recent research in USA, through digital education for low-income, homebound older adults, depression improved amazingly.

The development of specially designed apparatuses for them may be the most important thing. Digital world is far away from visually impaired people, digitally illiterate people including seniors, children in under-developed countries. For example, conventional have braille is invented almost 200 years ago. Still visually impaired people should read with 20cm thick braille book, only at library, not at their own home.

Do you say they can hear the text by talk-back function using their cellular phone? Then why don't you hear algebra question instead of reading and writing? Even the impaired people have the right to "read" and "hear". People without legs want to ride a roller coaster. Is it risky for them? Then, is there any plaything for people without legs? Science is half blind. Scientists do not see things and social conditions at balanced view point. They tend to flourish their knowledge excellence by making sophisticated products, which makes impaired, digitally illiterate, poor people and children in under-developed countries much more divided. Commitment from human science, social science will provide the balance. Fusion, interdisciplinary research should be made among the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering to make our society full vision instead of half blindness.

A girl in Sudan should be provided with opportunity of education along with bread and home. Elder people can handle smart devices with easier user interface. Visually impaired people have the same right to pick up Coke at Seven Eleven by reading braille on tins, read without other's help. We, privileged students, should keep this in mind.
