ACT - Korea and Hong Kong 2016-10-04 ¿ÀÈÄ 9:07:00

The operators of the ACT college entrance exam canceled the tests on June 11 for students in South Korea and Hong Kong at the last second. It was the last ACT exam of this school year, and the next will take place on September 10.

The sudden cancellation of the exam caused confusion, where many students didn¡¯t even realize that the test was canceled until they reached their test sites. Emails notifying students of the cancel didn¡¯t reach the students¡¯ inboxes until 7 a.m., an hour before students were to arrive at test sites. Many of the students left their houses before this time to take this test, which means that only a few recognized this change.

The ACT was canceled because many Koreans and Chinese people have ¡°cheated¡± on their exam. As in cheating, it was by attending academies that had made students memorize the answers from a previous ACT test. As a result, many of those who attended academies had achieved the best score until now.

The operators of ACT had planned to execute the exams in 56 locations in South Korea and Hong Kong on Saturday morning. The ACT decided to cancel the test soon after it received ¡°credible evidence¡± that the test materials had been copied to teach some of the Koreans and the Chinese.

The cancel affected 5,500 test takers, who will receive refunds of test fees. It is the first time one, and definitely two, whole countries had their ACT exams canceled. Even though the test takers will receive the fee for the tests, they will never be satisfied by money. Because of the minority that had cheated on the tests, the people who didn¡¯t suffer. Cancelling the test might be right, but it should only be to those who knew the test material, not all of the high school students in South Korea and Hong Kong.

The spokesman of the ACT exams, Edward Colby, stated that the test will be administered in South Korea and Hong Kong again in September. Even though the ACT is open again, the effect is devastating.

Many of the students were trying to finish this test faster to make better scores on their AP tests, which are exams of college level, and is the test to recognize students¡¯ ability. By canceling the test, they have made the plans mixed up, which can certainly change which college a student will attend. As everyone knows, college determines which job someone will get, and will change how they will live for the rest of their lives. This important test is ruined because the academies were selfish, and the academies should take responsibility for what they did.

The ACT made an indifferent decision that had made many suffer. Even though the ACT made such a devastating situation, the administrators had no choice because of the selfish and greedy academies. These institutes should take full responsibility for what happened, and should make actions to help alleviate the harm done to the other high school students. The academies should bear the burden.
