The Misconception of the Highest Mountain 2016-05-29 ¿ÀÈÄ 6:25:00

When people are asked the question, "What is the highest mountain in the world?" most people answer, "Mount Everest." However, the answer to the question is not Mount Everest but an inactive volcano called Chimborazo which is placed on the equator.
The Mount Everest is 8,848 above the level of the sea. The first people to climb the Mount Everest were Edmund Hillary (New Zealand) and Tenzing Norgay (Nepal) in 1953. The Chimborazo is only 6,263 meters high above the sea. You might be thinking, "Hey¡¦ then isn't Mount Everest taller than the Chimborazo?" As you know, the Earth is not shaped as a perfect sphere. The Earth bulges out around the Equator.
Because of its bulge, the distance from the Earth¡¯s surface to its center is greater around the equator. Mount Chimborazo is one degree from the Equator. Mount Everest is 27.6¡Æ north of it. The distance from the top of Mount Chimborazo to the center of the Earth is 6391 kilometers. The same measurement from the summit of Mount Everest is 6,382 kilometers. Therefore, the person standing on the Chimborazo Mountain would be closer to the surface of the Moon.
